April is Autism Awareness Month

With the Center of Disease Control and Prevention’s recent announcement that Autism is now estimated at being found in 1 out of every 88 children, the need for public awareness is at an all-time high.

Please check out the following information about Sensory Processing Disorder, which often co-exists with Autism, though it can be seen alone.

As the mom of triplets all diagnosed on the Spectrum (one with Autism, one with PDD-NOS, and one with Aspergers Syndrome), I have put together the following pages of links to more information about Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.  If there are any broken links on these pages, please let me know— though I did my best to make certain that all the links are updated, I may have missed a couple.

I have also found that the podcasts at Midnight in Chicago are very helpful.

Information about Non-Verbal Learning Disorder can be very informative as well.

My Gifted and Talented page includes a few links to information about “Twice Exceptional” children—those who are Gifted as well.

My own experience:

In 1982, while in college going for a degree in psychology, I had to volunteer at an approved organization.  The one I chose was an organization that provided afternoon recreation program to children with autism.

Years later (2000), my triplets were born.  One day when my children were 16 months old and receiving multiple therapies due to being so delayed (we were thinking it was because they had been preemies, but we were at the stage where they should have been beyond that delay) I walked through a room and saw one of my children doing something very particular… something that I had seen many of the children in the program I worked at in college doing , and it got me thinking. The conclusion: my kids did a LOT of things the children in the rec program had done!  I ran to the computer and did some research on the earliest symptoms of autism, and when I recognized my kids, I promptly went into denial.

A couple of months later, one of the special education therapists that had been coming to the house asked to see me alone and dropped what she thought would be a bomb shell – she believed the child she worked with was on the spectrum.  Surprising the heck out of her, after an initial moment of thinking I was right! I replied, “I know, and since you don’t see them, I should tell you that so are the others.” It turned out that the other therapists were all trying to find the courage to give me the same speech, not realizing that I wasn’t going to be shocked.  Eventually, one was diagnosed with severe autism, one with severe PDD-NOS/Autism (depended on which doc you spoke to) and the school system declared her mentally retarded, and the other had Asperger’s Syndrome and was Gifted.

I did one heck of a lot of research into therapies, took a little from here and a little from there, and made up my own for each child, based on what I thought would be helpful to each. I worked with them almost constantly, while the county Early Intervention therapists continued doing their thing.  If something didn’t work out, I researched some more and found something else to try.  When it was time for preschool, I chose the one that was the best fit with what I had been doing with the children.

We still have our share of challenges, mind you, but all three are in 6th grade, mainstreamed, and don’t need IEPs.

Thank you, God!

Chapter 16 of All Hallow’s Eve posted

Not sure when I’ll be up to writing again, but here is chapter 16 for your perusal

Update on my health…

I hurt my Achilles tendon on my left foot – of all times – when I can barely walk safely as it is!  I must have done one of my exercises wrong.  That’s why it is best to do them while WITH a Physical Therapist (aka Physiotherapist) or Occupational Therapist!
I have a fever, too.  The kids have strep so I’m sure that’s what it is. At least that’s all I’ll admit to myself.  It could not be anything that I might have picked up at the hospital. Nope.  I refuse to think that. Never mind that my throat does not hurt – it is strep.
I have an appt with the doctor today.
Slept in my own bed last night.  Got up this morning, took a shower, helped get the kids’ lunch and get them off to school, unloaded the dishwasher, and made myself breakfast.
NORMALCY!
I’m not at all angry or annoyed at anyone because I am very thankful for everyone doing the best they could while I was in the hospital and I love them all for doing so much for us, but I have to admit that coming home is frustrating in a way.  My house is not “my” house right now.  Nothing is where I left it, so I can’t find a lot of things.  In my condition, I can’t always go around looking for things, either.  I wanted to cut up veggies this morning but God only knows where the cutting board is. I was too dizzy  after bending over the dishwasher unloading and loading it (which I’m probably not supposed to be doing) to go looking for it.
There are quite a few things that nobody listened to me about.  For example – one little thing among many: while in the hospital I had advised but either nobody believed me or they forgot… but then again they might have been just pretending to understand me when they really couldn’t make out a word I was saying — putting a whole bunch of spoons/forks/etc. in the same compartment of the utensil holder in the dishwasher and facing them in the same way (up or down) will leave them dirty.  So, the utensils are in the drawer but most of them have food stuck to them.  What I don’t understand is: Why can *I* see the food stuck to them, but nobody else can?  Am I the “Great Stuck-on Food Profit” or something that makes me see it, when others cannot?
And I’m not so certain that the reason my son was sick last week had nothing to do with them using a sponge that was used on dishes that had wheat, soy, milk, and corn – possibly egg, too – on his lunch thermos and pots to make his rice spaghetti. Obviously, nobody has paid any attention to the hundreds of times I have said that I can’t use sponges anymore – only paper towels.  If I use a sponge, it must be thrown away afterwards.  To be honest, I wash everything in the dishwasher after hand washing it – it is just too much of a chance. My house consists of too many food allergies!  If one little molecule of protein is left on something, it might mean disaster.  The current fad in sponge-making has many brands of sponges manufacturing “walnut sponges” now too, and a couple of manufacturers have told me that they cannot guarantee that any of their sponges do not contain walnuts now.  It is not worth the risk!

Was in hospital…

Hello everyone.  Just got back from hospital today.  Had electrolytes drop to nothing for unknown reason and had stroke-like symptoms.  All tests show no brain damage. Lost speech and control of muscles of body, couldn’t walk, etc. Had to go through rehabilitation… still going to do at home.  Great effort to type.  Thank God for still being alive!  Have stumped docs why I’m still here lol.  God isn’t finished with me yet.  Thanks to anyone who knew and sent prayers and good thoughts.  Don’t stop!

I still have to finish writing All Hallow’s Eve, but hopefully that can continue soon. We’ll see.  Recovering comes first.

Hope you are all well!

All Hallow’s Eve, Chapter 13, Part 2 is posted!

Fanfiction.net

I am sorry to say that this might be the last story that I post on Fanfiction.net.

I’m publishing Dreams and Expectations soon.  Someone on FFN copied part of the story and incorporated it into their own.  Now, if the person had CREDITED my work, I would have been okay with this – what better form of compliment is there than someone being inspired to write by my work – but they have not credited me and instead have tried to pass it off as their own idea.  I asked this person to do so – privately so that if this was done by accident, the person was not humiliated (it is very obvious!) but this person decided to try to humiliate me instead by going public and still refusing to admit that she was inspired by my story.

I’m not worried about lasting problems – I will leave the first draft of DaE up to prove the date that I finished posting so that everyone knows who came up with the story first, but I have to say that I am quite discouraged.

Since this person is posting her story now and people are enjoying it and telling her to publish the story, I am a bit concerned that someone is going to accuse ME of plagiarizing her work once the book comes out!

I am thinking of taking down the bulk of the above draft version of All Hallow’s Eve soon after it is finished, and I’m also thinking of taking down A Promise to Remember (the first draft of Promises) – or leaving up only a couple of chapters of each with a note that Promises can be found on Amazon.

Honestly, I wanted to leave my stories up on the board, but I have to protect myself from people copying them without giving me credit.
